The Archaic Language of Eternity in the Images of Georg Tappeiner
GLACIERS: FRAGEMENTS OF ETERNITY
by Franziska Perpmer, Curator, 2025
Glaciers are one of nature’s miracles. In the images by Georg Tappeiner, they find their way into the valleys and cities of this world. In the distinctive visual language of the internationally renowned landscape photographer, outstanding cadences of light characterize the limited edition of unique works from the eternal ice. For fine art photography—currently enjoying increasing attention on the art market—Tappeiner’s glacier photographs carry a double significance: through their masterful artistic expression and their documentary value, they create a monument of archaic power for both art photography and the glaciers themselves.
The icy giants of our planet are melting. Although there are approximately 275,000 glaciers worldwide, they have been shrinking at an alarming rate for quite some time. Over the past ten years, this process has accelerated by more than 30 percent compared to the previous decade. To raise global awareness and encourage a more conscious relationship with nature, UNESCO declared 2025 the Year of Glacier Protection, and the United Nations proclaimed March 21 the International Day of Glaciers.
A great deal of attention is currently focused on these giants of ice. For many, they remain remote and inaccessible, yet their fate affects and concerns us all. Since time immemorial, the mighty glaciers have fascinated adventurers, artists, and prophets alike.
The faster the glaciers disappear, the more vital it becomes to preserve their memory. Georg Tappeiner’s fine art photographs keep this memory alive, bearing witness to the eternal legacy of ice—conveying to future generations what once existed. Through his unique language of light and emotion, he captures eternity in fleeting moments, literally freezing it, and creating lasting memories—of eternity, for eternity. His photographs make visible what has stirred human hearts since ancient times. He brings glaciers within reach, allows us to sense the primal force of eternal ice, and simultaneously reveals its delicate fragility.
Those who look at these photographs can immerse themselves in worlds that will soon belong to the past—yet still leave room for hope that eternity endures.
Georg Tappeiner’s glacier images—fragments of eternity, in which he halts both the world’s time and the glaciers’ retreat—have been published as a limited edition on the occasion of the 2025 Year of Glaciers.
